A happy turkey day
We are spending the Thanksgiving holiday with Trey's family and everything has been great. Yesterday we enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner with a large group of family; there were 25 of us (including kids) there for the meal, and a few more straggled in later. It's nice to spend holidays with so much family because isn't that what it's all about? Here are the boys that make me smile the most; the people in my life for whom I am most thankful:
As soon as we arrived, Thomas quickly made a new friend in his (third?) cousin, Michael, who is about two months older. Michael taught him how to throw rocks. :)
Here they were playing at the table after dinner with Milton, Aunt Beth and Keyes. It's great to be around so many babysitters!
Thomas enjoyed his first ride on a 4-wheeler (though his Daddy drove him a little too fast for my liking!):
He had a lot more fun than his face showed in this picture.
There were many dogs hanging around and Thomas loved playing with all of them.
He was pretty tired and considered taking a nap with this dog:
Parker, meanwhile, just hung out wherever he could, with whoever was willing to hold him (fortunately for us, there were many willing hands around). Here he was hanging out with Umpa:
One of the great things about the "farm" is the wonderful porch with many rocking chairs. A perfect spot after eating a bit much on Thanksgiving:
Thomas & Michael, however, found a more interesting place to hang out. First Thomas had to go check out Michael's hiding place:
And then he decided to join him:
At the end of the day, after much food and fabulous fellowship, I'm sure we were all feeling a bit like Parker...ready for a nap!

Thanksgiving at school
It's almost Thanksgiving and at Thomas' school, they've been preparing for it and learning about its meaning. Thomas is in the spirit!
Today they had a little Thanksgiving party. Parker and I got to attend and it was fun to see Thomas in his school environment. My pictures are not that great (they're actually some of the worst I've taken in awhile!), but they are, I guess, better than nothing!
First they had a short bit of circle time to sing their little blessing song (I should have made a video of it! Next time, I will!):
Then it was time for their "special snack":
You can kind of see Parker in the background of that picture if you look closely. He was hanging out with another classmate's sibling:
Parker & Sam conspire, "One day, it will be our turn to eat cupcakes!"
Until then, Thomas will have to eat them for Parker:

31 months old!
Apparently if I keep waiting around until I have pictures of Thomas, I'm never going to post his monthly update. I'm only five days late at this point. There's not a ton to update this month, but I'll take a moment to record a few thoughts.
Thomas is really becoming so much of a little boy and not so much of a toddler anymore. He can talk pretty well when he wants to and some of the things he says really make me laugh. Some of his current favorite phrases are:
"I've seen that before" or "I've never seen that before."
"I'm 'tendin'' to {insert something he is "pretending" to do here}..." For example, we asked him to try his broccoli the other night. He said, "I'm tendin' to eat it....Yummmmmmmy! It's delicious!" When he finally did try just a tiny bite, I asked him if he liked it and he said, "No, I didn't." Oh well. At least he tried.
"I'm sorry, Mommy, it was an accident." (this is said even if he just deliberately poured his drink all over the floor! :)
"I like {insert a number of things here, like peas/crackers/school/etc}. {PAUSE} I do not like {insert whatever he just said he liked.}" I'm not sure what this is all about, but he does it all the time! Sometimes it's with things I know he likes. Who knows.
"Why?" He is really getting into the typical-2-year old stage of asking "Why?" for everything! It's so much fun! (Can you read the sarcasm there?)

"What's your name?" He asks everyone we see this! Sometimes it's funny, sometimes a bit embarrassing!
Yesterday I took him to Target and let him peruse the toy aisles to gauge what things he might want for Christmas. He was contained in the shopping cart, so he was dependent on me to pick things up for him and let him hold them. He asked to hold a bazillion things, but then after quickly examining it, he'd say, "Let's find something else." Who knew a child could be so picky about toys! Of course when he finds something he says he wants, smart me says, "You'll have to ask your Nana, Umpa, Nannie or Papa for that!" ;-)
We try not to let him watch too much television (I try for not more than an hour a day), but there are times when I have to (somewhat shamefully, but then again we just "survive" around here sometimes!) use it as a babysitter. Well, pretty much only when I have to feed Parker right before a naptime or bedtime and I need Thomas not to come in and wake him up. He loves Calliou best right now, and Calliou seems to have replaced Bob the Builder (which is something I could not have imagined before!). :) He also sometimes likes Thomas & Friends (the train/tank engine), Zoombafoo (or something like that!), and Barney. We talk of getting rid of our digital cable, but I'm not sure what I'd do without the Sprout channel (PBS for toddlers/preschoolers).
He also still loves books. We've been going to the library occasionally and picking out books that are a bit longer and wordier than his beginner books and he loves them. It always amazes me how much he can memorize with all these books! He can open up a book that we read regularly and can go from page to page "reading" the story. Children truly are little sponges!
He is a delightful child. Thomas is good with "please" and "thank you," but we are still working on his "ma'ams" and "sirs." But he generally is a very well-behaved child. Sure, when he is tired or in a mood, he is a horrible listener, but usually a little bribery snaps him out of it. :) It's amazing what the promise of watching Calliou or an oatmeal cookie can do. I never thought I'd be "that parent" that pulls out bribery all the time, but we do what we must to survive around here. :) And honestly, it's not the norm.
School is going well. In the beginning he told me all about playing trucks with the other boys in class, but lately when I ask him who his friends are in school he gives me the name of two to three of the little girls. He doesn't always talk a whole lot about school, but he does say he has lots of fun. And we have a beautiful stack of artwork (that I need to figure out what to do with!). Sometimes he still cries when I drop him off, but this morning he found one of his friends and then joyfully told me, "Bye Mommy!" I'll be leaving shortly to join his class for their Thanksgiving party and that is fun to see him interacting with the other children.
Thomas still naps most days from 2-4:15 (sometimes he goes down earlier when he is obviously tired). On a few special occasions he has skipped a nap altogether and then he just goes to bed earlier and quickly. He goes to bed most nights around 7:45-8:00 and sleeps until about 7 am.
He is stll a picky eater. We've been trying to slowly introduce dairy into his diet, as he seems to do okay with it in small quantities, but he's not really fond of the taste just yet. We've been mixing his soymilk with whole milk, but he will thumb his nose up at it completely if we put too much of "daddy's milk" in there. He's probably the only kid in the world who doesn't like macaroni and cheese! I don't force food on him, but do try to encourage him to take at least one bite of everything on his plate.
I'm sure there are other things I will think of later to note, but if I don't post this soon, I'm afraid too much time will pass. I'll have to come back with some pictures later!

His latest new thing is something his Daddy taught him. He can accurately tell you which hand is his left hand and which hand is his right. Of course his Daddy taught him this because his Mommy is still not always so sure without giving it at least a little bit of thought. :)

Future blogger
Parker says, "Mommy, if you don't get to blogging soon, I'm going to have to do it for you."
He's apparently quite serious about it...
I enjoy non-school mornings when Thomas sleeps a little later than Parker. After I feed Parker I bring him in on our bed to play until Thomas wakes up. It's nice to spend a little alone time with Parker; he doesn't get much!
Sometimes I'll check my email while Parker plays with his toys. Today was the first time Parker tried his hand at the computer. He's a natural. :)

You'd think that I could figure out how to take a decent picture of my two kids together.
Well, this is what really happens when I try to set something up and ask Thomas to smile:
Apparently he is not a fan of the forced smiling. So he refuses to play along, despite my best begging and bribery.
And then by the time I finally get them both smiling, I am doing something totally crazy to obtain these smiles and then the camera is not held right and the picture is all off center.
Generally one is smiling and the other is not:
Or I get silly faces from Thomas:
And in the end, I get something that's just okay.
So Nancy, maybe I'm giving up getting a new picture of the boys together for my new blog look. Will come up with something soon!

Laughing baby

New coat of paint
All my friends have their pretty blogs, so when I got the link to Sheena's new blog early this morning (my coughing child awoke me at 4 a.m. and getting back to sleep never happened), I thought I'd check out a link off her page to make a cuter blog. I'm not 100% satisfied, so it might change again soon. I may have to seek out the talents of my very talented friend. Got some free time, Nancy? :)
Goodbye fair mobile
Yesterday Parker woke up just as I finished feeding him and put him down for his afternoon nap. It usually only works if I put him down asleep, but I decided to wait and see. He didn't really fuss, he was just moving around a lot (quickly rolled from his front to his back and then was just moving around the crib). He moved out of the picture on the video monitor, so I wasn't sure exactly what he was doing. After nearly an hour, he fussed for a short while and then fell asleep. I went in to check on him and adjust the camera (on the video monitor) so I could see him and this is what I found (sorry, couldn't use the flash, so that's why it is so dark):
The green box attached to the crib should have been more upright so that the white pole was going straight up. That's how much he must have tugged and pulled on those animals!
He managed to pull the mobile over and nearly onto himself:
So it looks like it's time for the mobile to come out of the crib! It seems like just yesterday he was home from the hospital and now he is already growing so much, so fast! Goodbye sweet mobile, you were a good friend to both boys!
First friends
On Sunday evening we enjoyed dinner with some friends. For Thomas, his first friend was Lily. Now it is Parker's turn, and his first friend is Lily's little sister, Sarah Ellen. They enjoyed hanging out together, as they always do. This time I remembered to take a picture.
Thank you to James & Taryn for inviting us over. We enjoyed both the food and the fellowship. And all week Thomas has talked about how he went over to Lily's house when it was dark outside. :)

And at first he seemed interested in what was to come.
Then he had a bite.
And decided he wasn't all that interested after all.
He was not that amused.
But with eyes full of skeptism, he gave it another try.
And then he learned if he pursed his lips, the spoon couldn't get through.
He much preferred to eat his bib.
On another attempt this week, he basically just left the rice cereal in his mouth until I had to essentially wipe it all out. Will try again today and tomorrow, and then move on to a veggie on Sunday.

Six months old!
On Sunday I was shocked to realize that it was already November 2, and that meant that Parker is now six months old! I can't believe that already a half of a year has passed. It truly goes by much too quickly. I keep thinking of things I wish I had done when he was smaller (like take more pictures of little toes and fingers...or enjoy the sweetness of late-night feedings without feeling so inconvenienced) and now those opportunties are gone.
He has the sweetest smile. When he smiles, his entire face smiles and it brightens up the room. It brightens up my day. I never tire of his open-mouthed grin:
Of course, it does mean that all of my pictures look the same. His smiles have one degree...ALL OUT. There is no in between...it's all or nothing. I prefer all...
Look at him curling those little toes! So cute.
At six months Parker:
* Weighs 17 lbs, 15 oz. and is 26.75 inches long (that's an increase of 9.5 lbs and 6.5 inches since birth).
* Is wearing mostly 12 months clothes (or 6-12 months size, depending on the brand) and size 4 diapers.
* Rolls over when he wants to, but doesn't seem to want to all that much. He turns around regularly in his crib.
* Sleeps wonderfully at night (generally from 7 to 7), but is much less predictable with naps. On a good day I get two two-hour naps out of him...maybe a three-hour afternoon nap if I am very, very lucky. But on most days I get one long-ish nap in the afternoon.
* Knows no limits of crying-it-out for naptime. If he doesn't go to sleep asleep or nearly asleep (after feeding), he will not go to sleep. I think he would cry/fuss for five hours straight if I would let him (I won't).
* Reaches and grabs anything in reach and immediately puts everything in his mouth.
* "Talks" a lot (mostly "ehhhhhh, ahhhhhhhh, ohhhhhhhhh, ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh," or something to that effect...he will imitate me if I make a similar noise)
* Loves, loves, loves to bounce in his bouncy seat; he knows just how to kick his feet to keep him bouncing.
* Will tolerate other devices (swing, exersaucer, jumperoo (tried that this past weekend for the first time)) for short periods of time.
* Still likes his playmat; it's one of the few places I can lay him down and walk away without him crying, more often than not.
* Is almost always happy just being held. As long as he is not hungry or very tired, this immediately cures his fussies.
* Enjoys bathtime...but he doesn't get one all that often. Poor kid. :)
* Loves his brother. He "talks" and coos if he even just sees a picture of Thomas. He always smiles when he sees him.
* Is starting to "sit" more and more. Mostly it's just a "tripod" sit, but he's getting better and better (as you can see in the pictures) and not falling over nearly as often, or quickly.
* Does not love standing all that much. Unlike his brother, he doesn't love to put weight on his feet, though he tolerates it and tries sometimes for short periods of time (and I mean with me holding him up).
* Will be trying solids soon; but for now he just nurses 6-7 times a day.
* Is generally easy going. He gets lugged around a lot more than his big brother ever did; and most of the time he just goes with it. He's not good at napping on the fly, but he does remarkably well without a nap.
* Laughs if I tickle his belly or put my head down and shake it, or put it down on his chest. He has the sweetest little laugh and it just always makes me smile.
* Loves to suck his thumb!
For the most part, he is such a joy. He has his fussy times and he needs to be held more than I would like sometimes, but all in all, he is really an easy baby. I am so thankful. I look back at updates I did on Thomas and we were still getting up to soothe him back to sleep and sometimes feed him several times during the night. And Parker has been sleeping through the night like a total champ since he was 11 weeks old. Knock on wood, I don't even consider that he will need me in the middle of the night anymore! Sometimes he wakes up, will talk for a minute, sometimes he'll fuss, then he'll find his thumb and go back to sleep. I don't know how we made it without a video monitor for Thomas!
I'm so thankful for another month of being Parker's mommy and I look forward to a lifetime more of months to come!

We all voted...and we didn't tip over
As I wait to see our new president-elect make his first speech with that title, I thought I'd share a little about our day.
That's not my sticker, but one I lifted off the internet because I'm too lazy to post mine. But I did earn my sticker today. Ended up having to take both boys to the poll and we stood in line for two hours (almost exactly!). It was lunchtime when we started and naptime by the time we left, but the boys did really well.
I was thankful the people around me were parents, so they were helping me push the stroller and lift the empty carseat (after both had been abandoned), and watching both when I decided I needed to run back to the car and get the Baby Bjorn and some more books and toys for Thomas! The DVD was great until the batteries died. By the time we got to the voting machines, I had pulled out my measure of last resort -- a small bag of Skittles. Everyone commented that the boys were really well behaved, all things considered. So there's that. :)
I kept telling Thomas on the way that we needed to go vote. In response all he kepts saying was, "It's not going to tip over." He rode in the kayak with Mom last weekend and I think he was getting voting confused with boating. :)
It was a historic day (no matter who won the election), and I hope my boys always know what a privilege it is to vote in this country. And though it was not ideal taking both boys to vote today, it was something that was so incredibly important and I hope my boys always know that.

I was thankful the people around me were parents, so they were helping me push the stroller and lift the empty carseat (after both had been abandoned), and watching both when I decided I needed to run back to the car and get the Baby Bjorn and some more books and toys for Thomas! The DVD was great until the batteries died. By the time we got to the voting machines, I had pulled out my measure of last resort -- a small bag of Skittles. Everyone commented that the boys were really well behaved, all things considered. So there's that. :)
I kept telling Thomas on the way that we needed to go vote. In response all he kepts saying was, "It's not going to tip over." He rode in the kayak with Mom last weekend and I think he was getting voting confused with boating. :)
It was a historic day (no matter who won the election), and I hope my boys always know what a privilege it is to vote in this country. And though it was not ideal taking both boys to vote today, it was something that was so incredibly important and I hope my boys always know that.

A happy Halloween
I can't say I coordinated the boys' Halloween costumes all that well, but perhaps this pilot flew to Maine to pick up an adorable lobster?
Trey ordered patches for THomas' flight suit to match his. Thomas has always been a fan of Trey's uniform patches, so this went over very well... (i blurred our last name for the blog)

Instead of the plastic helmet that came with the uniform, we opted for Trey's hat instead...
He was very excited to go trick-or-treating as this was his first year going to more than our direct neighbors. He came home with quite a lot of candy and he was quite excited about it. We let him have one snack-size bag of Skittles when he got home. I guess we shouldn't have been surprised that he couldn't get to sleep until after 10!
While Thomas was out walking around the neighborhood with his Daddy, Parker and I stayed home to hand out candy. He was quite a hit with everyone who came by.
He just wanted to eat it...
Maybe next year I'll coordinate their outfits a little better, but then again, I think there's nothing wrong with a pilot/lobster combination. :)
